Between 1902-1912 there was explosive growth downtown around 1st Avenue North and 20th Street. The city sprung up "overnight. Downtown developed from low-rise residential to mid-rise commercial "like magic".
Why is Birmingham, Alabama called "Steel City"?
Birmingham is the only place in the world where significant amounts of iron ore, limestone and coal - the three minerals needed to produce steel - can be found in close proximity. This lead to Birmingham being a huge steel town.
